Viking Longboat

The Viking longboat was the ultimate driving machine of its time. It was the key to the Viking era, the technological edge that enabled the legendary Norsemen to terrorize half of Europe and explore the new world 500 years before Columbus.

In this incredible program, travel to Anacortes, Washington, a stronghold of Scandinavian-American heritage, where a team of experts puts together an exact replica of a 1,100-year-old Viking longboat. Join the team as it painstakingly builds the vessel using rope made out of twigs and vine, forging its own nails and tools from a local blacksmith, and stitching together an authentic 10th-century Viking sail. Get an insight into the legendary history of Viking adventure and conquest, and finally, watch as the vessel is given away and launched into the waves with its proud (and surprised) new owner aboard.
