Uncommon Valor
The mettle of the Corps was proven on Midway, Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, Peleliu, Iwo Jima and Okinawa to name but a few. Nearly 87,000 Marines were killed or wounded during World War II and 82 earned the Medal Of Honor. Through Three years of conflict, over thousands of miles of the trackless Pacific against a ruthless and determined enemy, the Marines fought for freedom, for America and for the Corps. Truly for them, uncommon valor was a common virtue.
Disc 1:
Guam:
With America at war after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Marine garrison at Guam was quickly overwhelmed by the Japanese.
Midway:
While Marine fighter and dive bombers were slashing at Japanese fighters and harrying the enemy fleet, artillerymen and machine gunners were shooting down enemy planes.
Guadalcanal:
Marines of the First Division engaged the Japanese in the first American ground offensive of World War II.
Bougainville:
In their climb up the Solomons, Marine units faced and defeated an implacable combination of terrain and Japanese opposition.
Rabaul:
The Marine´s climb through the Solomon Islands was aimed at reducing and eventually cutting off Rabaul, the Japanese bastion on New Britain.
Disc 2:
Saipan:
one of the key operations in the Pacific War, the capture of Saipan placed B-29 bombers within the range of the Japanese homeland.
Tinian:
Conducted over two small beaches little wider than two football fields, the landing at Tinian was one of the most brilliantly conceived and executed amphibious operations in World War II.
Peleliu:
The conquest of Peleliu assured absolute domination of the Peleliu Islands, and secured the American flank for the return to the Philippines.
Iwo Jima:
The amphibious doctrines, techniques, weapons and equipment, which had proven so effective during the three previous years of World War II, received the supreme test at Iwo Jima.
Okinawa:
With a magnitude that rivaled the Normandy invasion the previous June, the Battle of Okinawa was the biggest and costliest single operation of the Pacific War.
