Tramp, Tramp, Tramp
Legendary silent clown Harry Langdon stars in his most successful film, alongside a young Joan Crawford! Harry works at his father's shoe store, which is in danger of going out of business. To drum up publicity, he enters a cross-country marathon walk sponsored by Burton Shoes. Harry hopes to not only win the ,000 prize money but also the heart of Betty, the girl on the Burton billboards. But the best laid plans of mice and shoe salesmen often go astray, and Harry will face many challenges before he greets the finish line…
Harry Langdon got his start making two-reel silent comedies for Mack Sennett (many of which are collected on the three-volume Harry Langdon Comedy Classics series, available from Alpha Video) in which he developed his unique manchild persona. Tiring of two-reelers, Langdon left Sennett to make features for First National, taking his collaborators, director Harry Edwards and screenwriters Arthur Ripley and Frank Capra, with him. Tramp, Tramp, Tramp would be the first of these features, and is considered by many to be the best. This is no doubt partially due to the presence of a young, twenty-year-old Joan Crawford, who had yet to make her major breakthrough in motion pictures. "Tramp, Tramp, Tramp was one of the finest of all silent comedies," wrote Joe Franklin in Classics of Silent Screen, "and Joan made a most appealing heroine as the object of the little clown's attention." Despite Tramp, Tramp, Tramp's box office success, Harry was dissatisfied with Edwards' work, tapping Frank Capra to helm his next feature, The Strong Man (1926), instead - beginning Capra's long career behind the camera as one of Hollywood's finest directors. (1926)
