In 1840, a young Russian aristocrat, Dimitri Sanin (Academy Award Winner Timothy Hutton - Best Supporting Actor, Ordinary People, 1980; Sunshine State), is returning home after a long tour of Europe. During a stopover in Germany, he encounters the beautiful young Gemma (Valeria Golino - Frida) and falls in love with her. Maria Polozov (Nastassja Kinski - Diary of a Sex Addict) is envious of the couple´s pure love and seduces Dimitri. Dimitri is caught in a whirlwind of emotion as he is unable to choose between his innocent love for Gemma and his sudden passion for Maria.
