The Little Princess (1939)
Sara Crewe (Shirley Temple) is a little rich girl who is enrolled in Amanda Michin's (Mary Nash) prestigious boarding school while her father goes off to fight in the Boer War in Africa. Sara wears her wealth well by befriending the poor waif Becky who is assigned the lowly job of polishing Sara's shoes.
When Sara receives news of her father's death, the school's ruthless headmistress realizes Sara's bills won't be paid. She makes the newly penniless girl a galley slave and forces her to live in an attic room, relegating her to the position of a scullery maid to pay off the debt. Sara, who refuses to accept that her father has died, escapes from the school to search for him. Believing that if she can find him her tragic days of abuse and poverty may be over, she receives help from the kindly Indian servant Ram Dass (Cesar Romero).
