Rome, May 1527. When German mercenaries arrive and the Sack of Rome begins, painter Gabriele da Poppi (Franco Nero) is working in his house. Because he is a famous and respected artist he's convinced that the war will not affect him, but he is sadly wrong. The mercenaries ransack his studio and rape Gesuina (Vittoria Belvedere), his lover and model, killing her brother. The chief of the mercenaries takes over the painter's place and decides to have a portrait made by Gabriele.
