During the Great Depression, John Dillinger became both a national hero and America’s most wanted criminal. Dillinger’s long line of crimes and outlaw behavior ranged from robbing banks, busting out of jail, and shooting police. His outlaw persona appealed to the troubled masses who struggled during the Depression. J. Edgar Hoover also used the celebrity criminal to build up the FBI.
