PROTEUS recounts the love story of two men on an infamous South African island prison in the 18th century. Among the inmates on Robben Island are two prisoners, seemingly as different as night and day. Claas Blank, and indigenous man whose people have been subjugated by colonial rule, has been unjustly imprisoned for stealing cattle. Rijkhart Jacobsz, a mysterious and withdrawn Dutchman, faces punishment for the crime of homosexuality. Blank is favored amongst the prisoners for his valuable knowledge of the erotic protea flower, which prison officials hope to cultivate for profit.

This complex and beautiful telling of their story underscores its resonance across the centuries, and nobly graces its directors' legacy in queer film.
