Penitentiary 2 - Special Edition
He's Too Fast, Two Fisted…"Too Sweet"!
This sequel to the urban masterpiece Penitentiary, directed and written by pioneering independent Jamaa Fanaka, may have garnered comparisons to Rocky, but its unsentimental look at urban life, ultraviolet fight scenes, and elements of '80s kitsch make it a perennial classic that stands alone.
Paroled after serving time for a murder he didn't commit, prison boxing champ Martel "Two Sweet" Gordone (Leone Isaac Kennedy) hangs up his gloves, moves in with his sister's family and rekindles his romance with Clarisse (Eugenia Wright). But he soon learns that life on the outside isn't much easier then it was in prison.
As a condition of his parole, he's required to work for fight promoter Sam Cunningham who has his own plans for Sweet's future. Though Sweet refuses to re-enter the ring, Sam pressures him relentlessly. To make matters worse, prison nemesis "Half Dead" Johnson (Ernie Hudson, "Oz", Ghostbusters II) has just broken out and wants to take Sweet down.
When Clarisse is murdered by "Half Dead", it's almost more than Sweet can bear. But, with the help of his trainers (Malik Carter, Black Sister's Revenge, Black Belt Jones and Mr. T, Rocky III, "A Team"), he agrees to return to the fight game and begin his rise to the top. Meanwhile, brother-in-law Charles (Glynn Turman, Light It Up, Race To Freedom) continues the battle against "Half Dead" and his two henchmen, who have vowed to destroy the Gordone family.
Featuring thrilling fight sequences, roller disco scenes, appearances by singer Stephanie Mills and comedian Rudy Ray Moore, this newly mastered DVD is a must-have for any serious collector of Urban Cinema.
