My Life In China
My father escaped poverty and starvation during the Cultural Revolution in 1966. After risking his life to get to America, he started our family in Boston. But when his restaurant went bankrupt and my mom got sick, he began to feel like he'd failed at the American Dream and questioned whether he wanted to move back to his home village in Gungdong Province to participate in the new Chinese Dream. A story of migration is passed down from father to son as we travel back to Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou, Taisheng and his village to retrace the precarious choices he made in search of a better life for our family. As the scale of my father's sacrifice becomes clear through conversations with our family who never left China, we ultimately explore the question of what it means to be both Chinese and American.
