Mr. Robinson Crusoe

Cruising in the South Pacific, Park Avenue playboy Steve Drexel jumps off his luxury yacht and swims to a deserted isle after betting his friends that he can survive with nothing but a toothbrush. Using only his ingenuity and sweat, he builds a tropical dream home high in the palm trees with every amenity. He discovers he is not alone on the island when a beautiful young native girl stumbles across Steve's compound and moves in with him. Life seems perfect - until an angry tribe of headhunters shows up determined to roast Steve on a stake and take back their princess!

Only eighteen months after his debut in D.W. Griffith's The Lamb (1916), handsome, charismatic Douglas Fairbanks had established himself as Hollywood's third highest paid actor, behind Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford. The mighty triumvirate of friends went on to found United Artists in 1919, and the studio's financial success was fueled to a great extent by Fairbanks' motion pictures. As the first president of the Motion Picture Academy Of Arts and Sciences, Fairbanks presented the very first Oscars in 1927. He is best known for his lavish swashbuckling adventures, most notably The Mark Of Zorro (1920), The Three Musketeers (1921), Robin Hood (1922) and The Thief of Bagdad (1924). Mr. Robinson Crusoe was one of four sound films Fairbanks made before retiring from acting with his final performance in 1934's The Private Life Of Don Juan. Perhaps following the lead of his old friend Chaplin, who continued to make silent films into the sound era, Fairbanks insisted on releasing both sound and silent versions of Mr. Robinson Crusoe. This remastered edition features not only the wide-release sound version but also the extremely rare silent version, never before on Alpha Video DVD. (1932)
