LES MISERABLES (1978): After swiping a loaf of bread to feed his family, Frenchman Jean Valjean (Richard Jordan) is put behind bars. After countless failed attempts, the poor man finally manages to escape from prison--but not from the attentions of determined police officer Javert (Anthony Perkins). Years pass, and Valjean has made a new life for himself as the mayor of a French town. But his secret past comes back to haunt him when his old adversary suddenly makes an appearance.

A TALE OF TWO CITIES (1989): A pair of lookalikes, one a former French aristocrat and the other an alcoholic English lawyer, fall in love with the same woman amongst the turmoil of the French Revolution.

THE WOMAN IN WHITE (1997): Two half-sisters learn about a mysterious woman from their new drawing teacher. When they see her in the grounds of their eccentric uncle's country house, they resolve to find out all they can about her.

NORTHANGER ABBEY (2007): Catherine Morland, the daughter of a rural clergyman, is taken to Bath, for the season, by family friends and once there, she meets Henry Tilney. As a result of exaggerated reports of her family's wealth, Catherine is invited to Northanger Abbey, the medieval seat of the Tilneys. Henry's father then receives a second report--as misleading as the first--representing Catherine's parents as extremely humble.
