Dancer-teacher-choreographer Lester Horton (1906-1953) is regarded as one of the founders of American modern dance. He developed a unique style of technique and choreography, established the first permanent theater in America devoted to dance, and organized one of the first integrated modern dance companies.
On this DVD, Dance Spotlight presents the Intermediate technique: the innovative dance training technique of Lester Horton. Mr. Horton developed a training method that explores the many ways the body can move.
With the Intermediate technique, Marjorie B. Percers, former Horton dancer and teacher, and Ana Marie Forsythe, chair of the Horton department at the Ailey School, lead a group of professional dancers through preludes, fortifications, balance, hinge and more intermediate studies. The material presented will help build strength, agility, and flexibility. This is also an excelled way to do a non-aerobic workout and learn beautiful movements that help develop grace, free artistic expression and reduce muscle stress.
Noted dancers and choreographers such as Alvin Ailey, Bella Lewitzky and Joyce Trisler began their dance training with Horton and used the technique with their own students. The Lester Horton technique is the source of inspiration to countless modern dance choreographers and continues to train strong, versatile dancers, expanding the body's traditional range of motion. The Intermediate technique is the second step in learning the Lester Horton Technique and will set you on a path to achieving your goals.
