Last Trail

Years ago, cowboy Tom Dane saved the lives of Joe Pascal and his pregnant wife during an Indian raid, and the thankful couple named their son after Tom in return. Now Joe is the sheriff of Carson City, which has been beset by stagecoach robberies. Tom arrives to help his old friend, but not in time to prevent Joe from being shot by the bandits. Mortally wounded, he makes Tom swear to take care of his young son and bring the criminals to justice. The stageline owners, concerned by the rash of thefts, decide to hold a stagecoach race and award whomever wins a new contract. The bandits' leader makes sure his men participate, meaning that it's Tom versus the crooks in the greatest stagecoach race of all time - with little Tommy Jr. in tow!

Tom Mix (1880-1940) was the undisputed "King of the Cowboys" during the early silent era of Western films. Born in Pennsylvania in 1880, Tom headed west early on, mastering horsemanship and serving as Sheriff-Marshal in Dewey, Oklahoma by 1904. He also performed in Wild West shows until he got his first movie job with the Selig Polyscope Company in 1910. After signing with Fox Films in 1917, his fame skyrocketed, eclipsing other stars such as Hoot Gibson and William S. Hart. Along with his famous steed, Tony, Mix was America's quintessential Western hero, and he remained so even after his tragic 1940 death in an Arizona desert car accident. Leading lady Carmelita Geraghty had previously been one of Mack Sennett's Bathing Beauties. Child actor Jerry Madden was billed as "Jerry the Giant" in the film's publicity. Director Lewis Seiler made a couple movies with Humphrey Bogart, King of the Underworld (1939) and The Big Shot (1942), as well Charlie Chan in Paris (1935) with Warner Oland. Fox later remade The Last Trail in 1932 as The Golden West starring George O'Brien and Janet Chandler. (1927)
