King Ludwig's Fairy Tale Castle
A trip back in time in the Bavarian Alps
What exactly makes Neuschwanstein such a unique place? Why do tourists from all over the globe rank it up there with the pyramids in Egypt, the Eiffel Tower, or the Statue of Liberty in New York? In her documentary, Gertraud Dinzinger tries to shed light on the myths of Castle Neuschwanstein. Neuschwanstein is only a part of the romantic oeuvre conceived of, created, and lived by Ludwig II.
The castle, sitting atop a rock, is closely connected with the grandiose alpine backdrop, the lovely Swan Lake, the serene Castle Hohenschwangau, and the folksy Bavarian hinterland around the picturesque city of Fuessen. To this day, Ludwig II is admired as a man who lived his dreams until his very end. When he was deprived of his powers, in his bedroom at Castle Neuschwanstein, of all places, he whispered to his valet: "Keep these quarters as a sanctuary - do not let it be defaced by gapers!"
Seven weeks after his death, the castle was opened to the public. Today, 3,000 tourists per day visit Neuschwanstein. The "Fairy Tale"-King´s dream became reality - and it is a perfect blend of nature and art. Paintings of sagas and fairy tales take you on a fantastic voyage, while sudden alpine weather changes create dramatic moods in the outside world.
For Ludwig II, the castle atop this barren rock with its maze garden, the stalactite cavern, the throne hall, and the four-post bed meant more than romantic fooling-around. For him it was absolutely "essential to create such heavenly spots, such poetic havens, where, for a short while, the horrible time in which we live can be forgotten.
