Jubilo
Jubilo is a homeless drifter who sleeps by the tracks in Caney, Oklahoma. One day, he is woken from his slumber by a train robbery in progress. Shrugging it off, he heads to Judge Hardy's ranch to beg for food. Told he has to work for it, Jubilo initially refuses until he catches a glimpse of the judge's pretty daughter, Rose. Head over heels, the vagrant quickly becomes the hardest worker Hardy has ever seen. Overhearing three men planning to frame Hardy for the train robbery, Jubilo realizes one of them is Bert Rooker, a convict the judge had formerly sentenced to jail. Unwilling to see his benefactor and the father of the girl he loves go to prison, Jubilo confesses to the robbery himself. But fate has a way of rewarding those who do good, and Jubilo may get a happy ending after all…
Beloved humorist and political commentator William Penn Adair "Will" Rogers (1879-1935) was one of the most iconic American figures of the 20th century. Of Cherokee birth, Rogers got his start on the vaudeville stage, where his trick roping skills and homespun humor delighted audiences. Hollywood felt he was a natural for their burgeoning industry, and in 1918 Will signed a contract with Samuel Goldwyn. Though Rogers was happy to be in the movies, he was stymied by the lack of sound, since much of his appeal lay in his laconic delivery (Jubilo must have been a personal favorite, however, as he remade it in 1932 as Too Busy to Work.) Rogers was much better served by the talkie era, and became a top box-office draw starring in classics like A Connecticut Yankee (1931), Doctor Bull (1933) and Judge Priest (1935). With a syndicated newspaper column and a weekly radio show, Will was more popular than ever at the time of his death in 1935 in a tragic plane crash. Jubilo director Clarence Badger later made It (1927), the movie that turned Clara Bow into a household name. (1919)
