The Cherokee people are one of the indigenous people of the Southeastern Woodlands of the United States. The Cherokee Nation has more than 300,000 tribal members, making it the largest of the 567 federally recognized tribes in the United States. Known as Aniyvwiya, or "Principal People" in the Cherokee language, the Cherokees are amongst the most noble and proud of the American tribes.
