India's Wandering Lions
Witness the incredible story of Asia's last wild lions, once on the brink of extinction but who now live dangerously close to the villagers of India.
A thousand years ago, lions were common in many regions across Asia but were frequently viewed as vermin - to be killed whenever possible and squeezed almost out of existence. Today, the Asiatic lion population has rebounded to more than 500 thanks to the commitment of the Indian people to preserve their wildlife - a cause for celebration. However, their success has surpassed the natural carrying capacity of Gir Forest Sanctuary, forcing lions to spill over its borders and seek new territories into the surrounding countryside. Can the lions remain out of trouble and coexist with their human neighbors for the long term? Against a backdrop of teak forest, farmland and villages, a unique relationship develops between lions and people, revealing a story not of continual conflict as we might expect, but one of survival and tolerance.
