Half Brother
Based on the internationally acclaimed and best-selling novel by Norwegian author Lars Saabye Christensen, The Half Brother is an evocative family saga revolving around the life of un-produced screenwriter Barnum Nilsen. His family is laden with oddities and secrets, the darkest of which happened on the same day all of Europe rejoiced over the end of WW II. On V-Day, May 1945, as the continent emerges from war, Barnums mother Vera is raped in her attic in Oslo by an unknown man, leading to the birth of Barnums half brother, Fred. When Barnum is born five years later, to the man that Vera has since met and married, the Nilsen family, like Europe, is already splitting in two. Growing up together during the Cold War - Barnum with his father, Fred searching for his - the half brothers possess a strange sense of connection, but eventually become estranged. Unspoken family secrets bring tensions to a head and Fred vanishes. Twenty years later Barnum stumbles upon his mothers old camera in the attic. On the film he finds a recent picture of Fred proof that hes been back and Barnum sets off on a single-minded quest to find him. As the true identity of Freds father comes to light, the two half brothers may once again be reunited. More than the hypnotic story of one splintered family, The Half Brother offers a haunting parable of 20th Century Europe.
