Geronimo - The U.S. Airborne In World War II
The United States Airborne played a major role in the success of Allied operations throughout WWII. From their very first jumps in North Africa and Sicily to the massive drops in Normandy and Holland, the Airborne was an important part of Allied military strategy. Initially conceived as an assault force able to parachute behind enemy line, then seize and hold strategic areas until ground forces could link up with them, the Airborne units ended up being used in many different ways. From dropping in to seize key positions behind enemy lines in Normandy and Holland to fighting tough ground forces at Anzio and the Battle of the Bulge, the Airborne was ready for anything. Elite, confident, and ready for action, the men of the United States Airborne were the best trained, best conditioned fighting force of the war. These men represented the finest America had to offer and they proved it in the face of unbelievable odds and under the most extreme conditions.
This two-volume documentary is THEIR story. Told entirely through veteran and historian interviews, this set features the stories and experiences of the paratroopers in their own words, creating a uniquely personal perspective of the United States Airborne forces during WWII.
Disc 1:
Normandy:
The most important Allied operation of the war, the Normandy invasion, might have been a failure without the Airborne and glider forces that landed behind Nazi lines, isolated the beach defenders and prevented a German counter-attack. Dropping at night under heavy anti-aircraft fire the D-Day jumps degenerated into a mass of confusion, scattering the paratroopers throughout Normandy. lost, alone, and surrounded by Nazis, the Airborne units fought their way through tough enemy resistance and helped secure a toe-hold in France.

Market Garden was a brutal battle between lightly equipped Airborne forces and heavily armed German resistance.
