Famous Trains
This special set documents two of the most famous named steam engines in the world. The footage, shot specifically for these programs, captures important historic events in the lives of these much loved locomotives, the 'Flying Scotsman' and the 'Duchess of Hamilton'. Those who could not attend can now experience the proceedings, and those who were there can relive them again.
THE FLYING SCOTSMAN - THE NIGHT MAIL For well over 100 years, steam locomotives battled nightly the 289 miles of the Through West Mail from Bathhurst to Dubbo until the end of steam operations in 1967. On the Queen's Birthday weekend of June 1989, this spectacular long gone steam event was recreated but this time the Night Mail was hauled by the world famous 4472 'Flying Scotsman' and Australia's famous C38 Class Pacific 3801 and triple heading for part of the journey with S Class Suburban Tank 3112.
THE DUCHESS OF HAMILTON In September 1938, the Duchess of Hamilton entered service on the LMS and it would be 26 years later, after covering over 1½ million miles before she would be retired. In 1985, the beloved engine was taken in by the Friends of the National Railway Museum for total restoration, who would return her to the museum 5 years later in perfect working condition. This program records every phase in the Duchess of Hamilton's five year restoration and her return to the main line.
