Coma

What is a coma? What is a "vegetative state"? What is the possibility for consciousness after emerging from a comatose state? What, in the end, makes life worth living?

These are the questions posed in the poignant HBO documentary Coma, directed by Academy Award nominated filmmaker Liz Garbus. The film goes inside The Center for Head injuries at JFK Medical Center to explore the mystery of coma and traumatic brain injury. It is estimated that traumatic brain injury affects more Americans each year than breast cancer, multiple sclerosis, HIV/Aids and spinal cord injury combined.

Coma focuses on the emotionally gripping stories of four patients - Tom, Roxy, Al´Khan and Sean - Following them over the course of one year, the critical window for recovery. The patients´ divergent progress evolves to the joy and sorrow of their family, friends and caregivers as they question what the outcome will be.
