Archives Of War: Vol. 2 - Rare World War II Documentaries
WAR ON THE SEAS - 1943: Produced by the March of Time for the Bureau of Naval Personnel, this 35-minute film recounts the Navy's activities during World War II - from Pearl Harbor to operations in North Africa at the end of 1942. Includes stunning footage taken from captured Japanese newsreels.
THE CASE OF THE TREMENDOUS TRIFLE - 1944: Ball bearings are an indispensable part of building war munitions and vehicles. This film shows the Allies planning a bombing raid on Schweinfurt, home of five factories that manufacture nearly two-thirds of the ball bearings in Germany.
KNOW YOUR ALLY: BRITAIN - 1944: Nearly feature-length, this film was produced by the War Department to stress good relations with our allies in Great Britain - though it can't help but get a few digs in. "In America we build porches to see our neighbors," says narrator Walter Huston, "in Britain they grow hedges to make sure they don't."
TWO DOWN AND ONE TO GO - 1945: A one-reel cutdown of a longer film directed by Frank Capra detailing the Allies' recent defeat of Italy and Germany - and the importance of Japan being "completely crushed" in the words of Army Chief of Staff George Marshall.
