Ancient Marvels PBS Explorer Collection
Travel the globe in search of some of ancient civilization's greatest architectural achievements, from the jungles of South America to the Egyptian desert. How were these massive monuments erected without the aid of modern technology? And why? This collection of NOVA programs includes:
Secrets of Stonehenge - Stonehenge may be the best-known and most mysterious relic of prehistory. Each year, a million visitors are drawn to the Salisbury Plain in southern England to gaze upon it. During the 20th century, excavations revealed that the structure was built in stages, and that it dates back some 5,000 years, to the late Stone Age. The meaning of the monument, however, was anyone's guess--until recently.
Riddles of the Sphinx - For 45 centuries, the Great Sphinx has cast its enigmatic gaze over Egypt's Giza plateau. The biggest and oldest statue in a land of colossal ancient monuments, its scale is staggering. This strange half-human, half-lion image has inspired countless fantastic theories about its origins, but surprisingly, the scribes of the period when it was built--during Egypt's Old Kingdom--passed over it in silence. Why?
Ghosts of Machu Picchu - Machu Picchu is the most famous archaeological ruin in the Western hemisphere and an iconic symbol of the power and engineering prowess of the Inca. But why was it built to cling to the steep face of a mountain? Who lived among its stone buildings, farmed its emerald green terraces, and drank from its sophisticated aqueduct system? In the years since its discovery in 1911, there have been countless theories about this "Lost City of the Incas," yet it remains an enigma.
Secrets of the Parthenon - For 25 centuries, the Parthenon has been shot at, set on fire, rocked by earthquakes, looted for its sculptures, and disfigured by misguided restorations. Now, NOVA goes behind the scenes with the Greek government's Acropolis Restoration Project--which has been restoring the Parthenon for over three decades--and takes viewers inside the minds of the ancient Greeks as they created their most enduring architectural miracle.
Secrets of Lost Empires II: Easter Island - The mute sentinels of Easter Island are mysteries locked in stone. Nearly 1,000 haunting human sculptures are the only remaining citizens of a vanished culture that existed a millennium ago. Weighing up to 80 tons each, the moai say nothing; but they speak volumes. Discover how Easter Island's massive monuments created peace, harmony--and ecological disaster. Includes a bonus episode: China Bridge.
