Stern small-town judge Calvin Cooke (Fredric March) always demanded strict adherence to the letter of the law of himself as he did others. However, when forced to grapple with the terminal illness and suffering of his beloved wife (Florence Eldridge), he does the unthinkable to end her pain and the skilled young defense lawyer (Edmond OBrien) Cooke often clashed with faces his greatest challenge.
